5th Annual Midwest
Accelerated Learning
Workshop
IAL’s Midwest Chapter held its fifth annual conference at Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday, October 11, 2007. Over 63 attendees enjoyed an inspirational—and practical—day of learning and networking.
Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including how to design and facilitate courses that stimulate curiosity, promote experimentation, and encourage risk-taking; how to foster deep learning, get consistent results, and create an environment in which each learner thrives; how to accommodate different learning styles and multiple intelligences; and how to integrate music into teaching and learning.
The keynote speech and morning session were conducted by Renee Mollan-Masters, author of You Are Smarter than You Think! As a teacher and speech pathologist, Renee’s work was profoundly transformed 20 years ago when she discovered Howard Gardner’s theories on Multiple Intelligences. She subsequently developed a learning system based on these theories that is now used in colleges and universities around the country.
Afternoon sessions, which were divided into 3 tracks (corporate, academic and adult education), were conducted by some of the best, most experienced teachers and trainers in Accelerated Learning, including:
Dave Meier, corporate trainer, Accelerated Learning pioneer, founder of the Center for Accelerated Learning, and author of The Accelerated Learning Handbook. Dave conducted a session on “Alchemy” for adult learners.
Chris Brewer, music specialist, teacher, therapist, founder of LifeSounds, and author of the soon-to-be-publishedSoundtracks for LearningTM: Using Music in the Classroom . Chris demonstrated how to use music and art in classroom/office/shop training.
Charlotte LeHecka, Ph.D., university professor, director of the Institute for Accelerative Learning, Teaching and Research, and author of A Historical Review of Accelerated Learning Research: A Monograph . Charlotte conducted a workshop for K-12 teachers.
Jenny Maddern, British consultant, trainer, writer and founder of Discovery Learning. Jenny shared numerous techniques that help to keep learning alive.
Thanks to the success of this year’s conference, the Midwest Chapter will again hold next year’s conference at WCTC. In the future, organizers plan to move it to other locations in Wisconsin or even to a neighboring state, such as Ohio.
